Templates, tools and processes can get you so far. It is the people behind them that ensure your success. The Volere people are your instructors and consultants. They experienced, they are insightful, and in conjunction with teaching and consulting they continue to apply the Volere techniques on today's projects. Meet the people:

suzanne robertson

   Suzanne Robertson is a principal and founder of the Atlantic Systems Guild. Suzanne is co-author of Mastering the Requirements Process—second edition, a guide for practitioners on finding requirements and writing them so that all stakeholders can understand them. Suzanne works with organisations to apply innovative techniques and fresh thinking in all of their systems development activities. Her work also includes research and consulting on the management, sociological and technological aspects of requirements. The product of her research and experience is Volere, a requirements process, template and techniques for assessing requirements quality, and for specifying requirements.

Suzanne is author of many papers on systems engineering. She speaks at numerous conferences and universities. She is a member of IEEE and British Computer Society, and on the board of the British Computer Society’s Requirements Engineering Specialist Group. She was the founding editor of the Requirements Column in IEEE Software.

Her most recent publication was in conjunction with her fellow principals of the Atlantic Systems Guild: Tom de Marco, Peter Hruschka, Tim Lister, Steve McMenamin and James Robertson when they published Adrenaline Junkies and Template Zombies: Understanding Patterns of Project Behavior in 2008. The book recognises and defines patterns of the way people behave during projects.

Suzanne’s other interests include a passion for the opera, cooking, skiing and finding out about curious things.

james robertson

   James Robertson is a consultant, lecturer, author, project leader whose area of concern is the requirements for software, and the contribution that good requirements, and innovation, make to successful projects. James is co-author of Mastering the Requirements Process—second edition , a book that sets out his ideas on the requirements process. This book introduced the systems world to the Volere Requirements Specification Template and the Volere Process; an estimated 30,000 users worldwide have since downloaded the template (available on this site). The book has achieved market success due in large to its clarity and innovative explanations of the requirements process.

James’ career is broad, both in a geographical sense and the areas and systems that he has worked with. It is fair to say that James has worked on almost every type of commercial IT project. From a start as a programmer in a software development house in Sydney, to consulting in New York and London, he has earned his experience at the sharp end of both project and research work.

In 1983, James, along with Tom DeMarco, Tim Lister, Steve McMenamin and John Palmer and Suzanne Robertson (with the later addition of Peter Hruschka) founded the Atlantic Systems Guild. This organisation has achieved a level of respect within the IT industry far beyond its size, having published over 20 books, numerous seminars and papers. Pooling their experience with many diverse projects the guild members have published Adrenaline Junkies and Template Zombies: Understanding Patterns of Project Behaviour, which won the Jolt Productivity Award for best general book.

James studied architecture at the University of New South Wales, and Information Processing at the New South Wales University of Technology. When he is not researching and developing software, James can be found on the skiing or photographing nature in the French Alps.

adrian reed

   Adrian Reed is an enthusiastic business analyst and advocate of the BA profession. His career started in an insurance broker’s office, where he was involved in process improvement and optimising information systems long before he knew about any formal BA techniques. His next job was for a multinational insurer, and this is when he first came across the "formal" BA role and found that it was the perfect fit for him. His career has spanned various BA and leadership roles within the financial services industry, working on a range of tricky projects in very different contexts in different companies.

Today he is Principal Consultant for Blackmetric, a niche business analysis consulting and training firm, and works with clients in a wide range of domains. He is a past president of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) UK chapter, an international speaker and regular blogger. Adrian wrote the 2018 book, "Business analyst" (published by BCS) which discusses the breadth of the BA career, and the 2016 book "Be a great problem solver... now" (published by Pearson). He also contributed to the 2013 book "Business Analysis and Leadership" (published by Kogan Page).

Adrian holds the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis, the IIBA Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) and the BA Manager Forum Expert BA Award. He delivers both 'Mastering the Requirements Process' and 'Business Analysis Agility' courses. Adrian has a strong business analysis background, having worked on a wide range of strategic projects across a variety of business domains, geographies and technologies.

tim lister

  Tim Lister is a Principal of the Atlantic Systems Guild, Inc., based in the New York office. He divides his time between consulting, teaching, and writing. He is working on tailoring software development processes using software risk management and customer value techniques. He is a member of the Airlie Software Council, a group of industry consultants, advising the Department of Defence on best practices for software development and acquisition.

Tim is the co-author with Tom DeMarco of Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams. This book has been a book club selection of the Library of Computer and Information Sciences, and has been translated into six languages.

Tim has more than a quarter of a century of professional software development experience. Before the formation of the Atlantic Systems Guild, he worked at Yourdon Inc. where he was an Executive Vice President and Fellow, in charge of all instructor/consultants, the technical content of all courses, and the quality of all consultations.

Tim lives in Manhattan. He holds an A.B. from Brown University, and is a member of the I.E.E.E. and the A.C.M. He also serves as a panellist for the American Arbitration Association, arbitrating disputes involving software and software services, and has served as an expert witness in litigation proceedings involving software problems.

james archer
   James Archer is a business analyst, consultant, teacher, writer and innovator. James is co-editor and contributing author of Business Analysis and Leadership (Kogan Page, 2014). He identifies the key to great business analysis as an inclusive leadership style, thinking innovatively, working collaboratively, acting strategically and helping people discover their real requirements.

James is one of the founders and organisers of the Business Analysis European Conference now in its seventh year. In 2009 he was awarded Business Analyst of the Year, and he has a Masters with Distinction in Innovation, Creativity and Leadership (Minnov) from City University.

James is an associate of the Atlantic Systems Guild and has contributed to the development of and taught the Volere approach to requirements and business analysis for the last 8 years.

Specialising in health and social care, he brings a track record of designing and delivering innovative solutions to complex problems. His key role is to help senior stakeholders understand the wider strategic and business change implications of potential solutions. He also has a rare ability to enable people at all levels of an organisation to work and think together in pursuit of lasting change.

James is a Director of Public World, who are UK partners of Buurtzorg, a not-for-profit organization in the Netherlands that is transforming the way care at home is delivered by nurse-lead self-managed teams. Buurtzorg has grown from a team of 4 nurses in 2007 to over 800 teams of 9,500 nurses with a back office of only 45 staff and has won employer of the year in the Netherlands for 4 out of the last 5 years. James is working with Guys and St Thomas Hospital in London and other NHS organisations to adapt and adopt the Buurtzorg model to the UK context.

Recent clients have included Royal Mail, Waters Corporation, Ikea, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster Council, the Norwegian Court Administrative Service, Credit Suisse, Estonia Energy and Honeywell.

andrew kendall

   Andrew Kendall is a senior business analyst with over 10 years experience of working with Volere in the financial services sector. Having worked both in Australia and Europe, his clients include Insurance Australia Group, Marsh & McLennan, Lloyds of London, Barclays and Lloyds TSB. He brings a pragmatic, results-focussed outcome to project work. Andrew was praised by project partners at IBM for being able to take a limited brief and turn out high quality results.

Andrew’s project experience using Volere has been on a variety of applications including producing specifications for a Pan European Client portal, and developing concepts used in financial crime and fraud management tools. Andrew has also worked extensively on eBusiness applications within the sector and brings with him a wealth of knowledge ranging from large Internet banking and insurance programmes to smaller localised projects. Andrew has shown a keen interest in the people side of requirements management. He wrote his first article entitled ‘The (Proto) type of thinking at IAG’ for in 2004, which discussed the project mindset and the use of prototyping in requirements and design.

Andrew holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Technology, Sydney, (UTS) with a major in strategic information technology. He also holds a Diploma in Marketing Management. He is a member of the UTS Alumni and a member of the Australian Institute of Management. 

Andrew’s use of structured techniques started at an early age. At age 15, Andrew was hired as a master builder by the Lego toy company to work alongside their model builders. Not surprisingly, modular requirements and requirements re-use are part of Andrew’s modus operandi. 

Andrew has now returned to his native Australia where he runs the ThinkAnalyse company. When not working on Volere, Andrew is Chairman of Radio Lollipop, an interactive play programme at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

stephen mellor

   Stephen Mellor is an independent teacher and consultant focused on methods for the construction of real-time and embedded systems. He is the author of Structured Development for Real-Time Systems , Object Lifecycles, Executable UML, and MDA Distilled. He is also a signatory to the Agile Manifesto.

Until recently, he was Chief Scientist of the Embedded Software Division at Mentor Graphics, and founder and president of Project Technology, Inc. before its acquisition. Mr Mellor was the Chairman of the Advisory Board to IEEE Software for ten years and a two-time Guest Editor of the magazine. He is also adjunct professor at the Australian National University.

Stephen teaches the Requirements Co-Engineering course, a version of Volere that is tailored for Systems Engineers and Software Engineers and others working with embedded systems.

katarzyna kotr

   Katarzyna Kot is a business analyst, consultant and teacher with over 15 years of experience in both high-tech and financial sectors. She has worked on projects for many international organisations like Philips, NXP Semiconductors, ASML, European Space Agency (ESA), ING Bank or AEGON. In these projects she has applied the Volere methodology and tailored it to customers’ needs.

Katarzyna believes in the pivotal role of business analysis to success of any organisation. At BA Coach she promotes a new approach to business analysis merged with agile, problem solving and user centred approaches like Design Thinking and Soft Systems Methodology. The user centricity is a key to new innovative products and services that delight customers.

Katarzyna is devoted to developing awareness and recognition of Business Analysis and its techniques. She does it through teaching: sharing knowledge and inspiring others to excel in this field. Next to delivering the Volere workshops, she is also an accredited trainer for BCS courses in Business Analysis Practitioner Diploma.

Dedication to Business Analysis led Katarzyna to establish an enthusiastic team of business analysts to set up in 2010 a Dutch chapter of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). She is currently a member of the IIBA NL Board of Directors.
